Four decades of period joinery
Heritage Window Consultants Ltd is part of The Barnsbury Group, a family-run heritage joinery business founded in 1980. That is where our knowledge comes from. For over four decades the group has designed, restored and manufactured traditional timber windows and doors for historic properties, and that experience is what allows us to tell you what can be restored, what should be replaced, and what matters for planning.
The consultancy is run independently of the group’s joinery businesses. You pay for the survey and the report. Most clients take it to their own architect or contractor. If you would like a quote for the work we have recommended, we can arrange one through the right business in the group, but only if you ask us to. Either way, our advice does not depend on what happens next.

Our consultancy combines traditional knowledge of period joinery with modern digital surveying techniques. Whether through remote digital assessments or detailed on-site inspections, our reports deliver clear repair against replacement recommendations, planning-ready documentation, and actionable, conservation-aligned advice.
We provide honest, detailed assessments of traditional windows, focusing on what can be restored, what should be replaced, and what matters for planning. Our goal is to help clients make informed decisions that respect both the building's condition and its heritage value.
Who we work with
We work with a range of residential and commercial clients: homeowners restoring listed properties, architects and interior designers preparing planning applications, estate agents and developers managing historic sites, and property maintenance firms responsible for heritage assets.
We regularly liaise with local authorities. Our reports have supported applications in Islington, Camden and Westminster, and condition surveys for institutions and estates in Liverpool, Harrogate, Belfast and north London.
How a report is produced
Every report follows the same sequence, whether the survey is carried out on site or from your photographs.
- Site visit, or photographs where the survey is digital
- A coded register of every opening in scope
- Square-on and detail photography of each one
- Priority grading: urgent, recommended or monitor
- Component-level findings, with the reasoning written out
- Internal review before anything is issued
- Issued as a PDF the client owns
