What you pay for, how we reach a recommendation, and how our relationship with The Barnsbury Group works in practice.
Heritage Window Consultants Ltd is part of The Barnsbury Group, a family-run heritage joinery business founded in 1980. That is where our knowledge comes from. For over four decades the group has designed, restored and manufactured traditional timber windows and doors for historic properties, and that experience is what allows us to tell you what can be restored, what should be replaced, and what matters for planning. The consultancy is run independently of the group’s joinery businesses. You pay for the survey and the report. Most clients take it to their own architect or contractor. If you would like a quote for the work we have recommended, we can arrange one through the right business in the group, but only if you ask us to. Either way, our advice does not depend on what happens next.
What are you actually buying?
You pay for the survey and the report, and that is the whole of the instruction. The report is issued to you as a PDF, it is yours to keep, and most clients take it straight to their own architect or contractor.
The fee is agreed in writing before we start, and it does not change according to what the survey finds.
How is a recommendation reached?
Window by window, from what we record on site. The box frame, the sashes, the sill, the glazing bars, the cords and weights and the glass are each looked at separately, because in an older window they are very often in quite different condition, and a problem with one part does not mean the others have to go.
Where we recommend replacement, we set out the reasons, so that a conservation officer, a contractor and the owner can all follow the thinking back to the window it came from, and every report is checked before it is issued.

What if you would like a quote for the work?
If you would like a quote for the work we have recommended, we can arrange one through the right business in the group, but only if you ask us to. It is a separate instruction, and the report is not revisited in the light of it.
