Scope
Window survey, measured drawings by window type, glazing sections and a window heritage statement

A survey of the windows at a public house in Stockwell, taken through to the drawings and written evidence that a consent application needs.

The instruction covered the survey itself, measured shop drawings by window type, glazing cross-sections and a window heritage statement, so that the application could be decided on its merits rather than returned for insufficient information.

Drawings and heritage statement

Nine windows were surveyed, with a tenth boarded up and excluded, and the overall priority was urgent.

The glazing told the building’s history. The top floor kept mainly original rolled glass, while the first floor and rear were mostly modern replacement float in a mixture of three and four millimetre, and some panes turned out to be plastic rather than glass, which was reason enough on its own to specify them for replacement.

Restoration was found to be possible on some windows and not on others. Where replacement was recommended it was specified like for like, manufactured to match the original features and profiles, and to make that possible the profiles were captured on site, photographed against a metric scale using a profile gauge or a clay impression, so that the new joinery could be matched rather than approximated.

The survey was then taken through to measured drawings by window type, glazing cross-sections and a window heritage statement for the consent application.
